Cloud Over Cerro de la Silla

Cerro de la SillaCloud over Cerro de la Silla; lightning
or is it just strobe lights on TV masts?
There's a background muttering in the air
or is it just tyres on Las Torres?

Crickets chirp or is it just
corrugated iron and the wind?
Frugs barp deep in throated meoldies
or is it garb deposits near depositos
farting gentle methane evening breezes?

Tired babycarrying indian women
eat bean taquitos invoke Quetzalcoatl
or Kukulcan or a dozen other
Gods that doze in reptilian pretence
of being in our likeness.

Rain frosts the air as cloud's first
caress kisses your brow, breathing
'you're still alive'.

Stones move like tortoises.
Darkness hovers just out of reach,
poised over your left shoulder like
some old najual waiting to recruit
you as the next Carlos Castenada.

Exhale that first sweet secret breath,
slowly expand and fill up spaces
in tiny drops of water in which you
exist waiting once again for lungs, a
voice with which to preach in vain
the folly of eating flesh.

Soaring like ragged eagles, gaps in cloud
allow the moon to pierce you in limelight.
Something perches lightly just under
your left eye and for the moment you
are unable to do anything as it
inches slowly but inevitably towards --

Ah God! The moment comes
a sudden spastic sweep of hand
the creeping thing is gone and
outside an indian woman's voice
shouts "No--pal--it--o's?"
