Goodbye, Beryl
in 1972, I joined
Diplomatic
Wireless and spent a year on one of the most remote places in
the world, Masirah Island in the Arabian Gulf. This is a story of
going somewhat mental in a place where camel spiders thrived, feral
cats screamed in the night, and giant radio transmitters beamed UK
propaganda over thousands of kilometers. PART 2 |

ROOTS—A year in Gambia I went to Gambia with a young engineer, Tim Higgins, to install transmitters at Bonto, and Basse, 250 miles upriver. The task was to take nearly a year. Along the way we discovered the truth about Alex Haley and “ROOTS”, visited Slave Island, and experienced many strange events. See the photo gallery! |

South Yemen
and the Wadi Hadhramout
The story of my times in the Wadi Hadhramout, where I installed
a Marconi mobile communications system for the PDRY Light and Power authority.
Later I mapped the terrain of the
Five Towns region. This was during the time of President Ali Nasser. My
experiences later formed the basis for much of my first published novel,
Appointment In Samara. |
